#52weeksofnature Photo Contest Week 17 Winner

The winner of Week 17 of our #52weeksofnature photo contest is Colton Rogers (@coltivate.photography). There aren't many places in the world with a better combination of rugged mountain peaks, turquoise glacial water and evergreen trees than Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. Colton has won $150 and is getting his winning image printed on a HippyTree t-shirt. Explore the Nature Photography Collective section on our site to view t-shirts of past winners.

Where was the image shot?
Moraine Lake, Canada

What camera did you use and what were the settings?
Camera: Sony a6000
Lens: Sigma 16mm
Shutter Speed: 1/90
Aperture: f/6.7
ISO: 200

Was there any special preparation required to capture the photo?
Not really, just getting up at about 4:30am to make it before sunrise. The place gets fairly crowded at sunrise, but it’s unbelievable nonetheless.

How long have you been shooting?
Since the end of 2016, so a little over 3 years.

What's your favorite subject matter to shoot?
I have to say that’s a tie between astrophotography and wildlife. Astrophotography embraces the true power of your camera and there’s nothing like sitting under the stars. Wildlife because it’s unexpected and you are playing with something unpredictable.

Where would be your dream location to take photos?
Faroe Islands.

Who are some photographers that inspire you?
Ansel Adams, Jimmy Chin, Paul Nicklen, all trail blazers in the field.

What excites you about photography?
It has taught me so much about weather patterns. Also, it puts me in some crazy situations you normally wouldn’t put yourself in like hiking in the pitch dark in bear country or falling in a frozen lake (it was shallow). It’s all for the adventure and the shot is just a reminder.
