#52weeksofnature Photo Contest Week 11 Winner

The winner of Week 11 of our #52weeksofnature photo contest is Scott Wassom (@scottwassom). Part of creating a great photograph is not only being in the right place at the right time, but always having your camera with you. Scott has won $150 and is getting his winning image printed on a HippyTree t-shirt. Explore the Nature Photography Collective section on our site to view t-shirts of past winners.

Where was the image shot?
Yosemite National Park, CA

What camera did you use and what were the settings?
Camera: Sony a7R III
Lens: Sony 16-35mm
Shutter Speed: 1/800
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 250

Was there any special preparation required to capture the photo?
No, this was truly a “right place, right time” shot. I was hiking to the viewpoint with a group of friends and saw this lighting and ran ahead. I was freaking out the whole time about how great it looked.

How long have you been shooting?
On and off since I was 14, but I got serious about photography about three years ago. Now I try to take my camera with me as often as I can.

What's your favorite subject matter to shoot?
My favorite is astrophotography, but landscapes are a very close second.

Where would be your dream location to take photos?
Any of the U.S. National Parks, but Yellowstone, Redwoods and Grand Teton are at the top of my list.

Who are some photographers that inspire you?
Chris Burkard, Jimmy Chin, Paige Tingey, and Emmett Sparling.

What excites you about photography?
I love that it gets me outside to capture little moments with my family and friends in places that we love, and having that moment frozen to look back on. Seeing the look on someone’s face who loves a photo you took of them is great too.
