#52weeksofnature Photo Contest Week 2 Winner

The winner of Week 2 of our #52weeksofnature photo contest is Corey Smith (@wanderersmithphotography). A wide angle lens is great for capturing nature, but sometimes you need to zoom in to appreciate all the details. Corey has won a $100 gift code to hippytree.com and we are donating $100 to the Surfrider Foundation in his name. Learn more about Corey below.

Where was the image shot?
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas.

What camera did you use and what were the settings?
Camera: Nikon D3400
Lens: Nikkor 70-300mm
Shutter Speed: 1/4000'
Aperture: f/13
ISO: 2500

Was there any special preparation required to capture the photo?
Going into this trip I wanted to capture a mix of wildlife close-ups and landscapes. I took a few different lenses so I could adjust as needed, but ultimately the shoot had a spontaneous approach.

How long have you been shooting?
I started shooting just over a year ago and I’ve absolutely found my passion.

What's your camera of choice?
My Nikon D3400 is my first and only DSLR camera. I also enjoy working with my GoPro HERO 5 because of its waterproof construction and compact size. That’s always my go-to for multi-day hikes and times when I might get a little wet.

What’s your favorite subject matter to shoot?
I love anything landscape and nature related. Whether it’s wildlife or capturing memories on a hike, I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of nature.

Do you shoot with a crew or shoot solo?
I've only shot alone. Hopefully one day I’ll be sent on assignment with a crew to share the memories with. For me, that’s the dream.

What excites you about photography?
Photographs let people see places in the world that often they didn’t know existed. It inspires individuals to get out, explore and experience nature. Photography is an art that can be as complex or as simple as you want, and there’s no right or wrong.
