#52weeksofnature Photo Contest Week 37 Winner

The winner of Week 37 of our #52weeksofnature photo contest is Dalton Johnson (@daltonjohnsonmedia). Hiking the 22 miles to the highest peak in the continguous U.S. takes a lot of focus and stamina, but if you have the energy you can capture some unique scenery along the way. Dalton has won a $100 gift code to hippytree.com and we are donating an additional $100 to the Surfrider Foundation in his name. Learn more about Dalton below.

Where was the image shot?
Mount Whitney, California

What camera did you use and what were the settings?
Camera: Sony a6000
Lens: E 55-210mm
Shutter Speed: 1/320
Aperture: f/7.1
ISO: 100

Was there any special preparation required to capture the photo?
The shot came naturally along the Whitney Trail on the way to the summit. I kept running off to some of the side peaks to snap images along the way. I saw this one lining up perfectly.

How long have you been shooting?
Photography began as a joke class in college to fulfill my art requirement. That class changed my life's trajectory! After graduating I moved into a car, became a dirtbag, and lived every day to photograph surfing and climbing. I bought my first camera in the fall of 2016.

What's your favorite subject matter to shoot?
Everything outdoors that can tell a story. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be a toss-up between big mountains and big waves!

Do you shoot with a crew or shoot solo?
If I can sucker a friend into a suffer-fest, I will have a "crew." For the most part, photography is a solo endeavor.

What excites you about photography?
Photography has given me direction and a voice since graduating from Santa Clara. Every time I press the shutter endorphins kick in. It is silly, but I get a high just holding my camera knowing I can tell a story.
