#52weeksofnature Photo Contest Week 8 Winner

The winner of Week 8 of our #52weeksofnature photo contest is Charlie Hoberman (@c.hoberman). You never know what you're gonna get when shooting in the ocean. The right combination of water, light and motion can create some incredible imagery. Charlie has won a $100 gift code to hippytree.com and we are donating $100 to the Surfrider Foundation in his name. Learn more about Charlie below.

Where was the image shot?
Laguna Beach, California.

What camera did you use and what were the settings?
Camera: Nikon D850
Lens: Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S
Shutter Speed: 1/1600'
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 64

Was there any special preparation required to capture the photo?
Shooting shallow reef slabs requires you to be as steady as possible due to the water moving so fast along the reef. I was crouching ankle deep to get this shot and needed to make sure I had enough time to hold the trigger down as well as sneak out of the impact zone. It doesn’t always work out, but that’s how you get the sickest shots.

How long have you been shooting?
Since I was 11.

What's your camera of choice?
I recently upgraded to the Nikon D850 and I can’t complain!

What’s your favorite subject matter to shoot?
Surfing, because there are so many elements to each shot that are different every time.

Do you shoot with a crew or shoot solo?
I like shooting with a friend or two but never more. Sometimes I shoot solo for the peaceful, therapeutic aspect.

What excites you about photography?
My favorite part of photography, especially when shooting in the ocean, is when every environmental element comes together and allows for the perfect shot. Ideally, sunset or sunrise, unique cloud formations, glassy conditions and clear blue water. Doesn’t get much better than that.
