Week 10 Winner

1

The winner of week 10 of our 2018 #52weeksofnature photo contest is Dave McMahan. Some may say a raven is a bad omen, but this photo of a raven soaring through Canyonlands National Park with the La Sal Mountains in the distance is nothing short of majestic. In addition to winning a $100 gift code to hippytree.com we are donating $100 to the Access Fund on Dave’s behalf. Learn more about Dave below:

How long have you been shooting?
I’ve been shooting for 29 years. I started at 16 years old and never stopped, and it’s been quite a journey over the years.

What’s your camera of choice?
My favorite camera and lens combination is the Canon 1DX Mark II and the 70-200mm IS f/2.8 lens. As it happens I replaced my 15-year-old 70-200 the day before we came to Canyonlands, and had it not been for the speed of that new lens I might not have gotten that shot.

What excites you about photography?
It is constantly a new challenge and always involves some sort of problem solving. Trying to find a new way to see something or tell a story in a way that hasn’t been done before keeps it very interesting.

What’s your favorite subject matter to shoot?
I began my career as a portrait photographer and my work in South Florida deals mostly with the dance industry. As a result, I’ve developed a stylized portrait style that conveys a sense of movement combined with controlled lighting generally done on location. And after telling you all that, my favorite thing to shoot is dancers underwater.
