Where was the image shot?
Carlsbad, CA

What camera did you use and what were the settings?
Camera: Canon 5D Mark IV
Lens: Canon 100-400mm
Shutter Speed: 1/1000
Aperture: f5.6
ISO: 100

Was there any special preparation required to capture the photo?
I always have a general idea of what the conditions are looking like. On this particular morning, I knew there was going to be a pretty big swell. I shot from sunrise all the way through late morning since the waves were insanely powerful and just beautiful that morning.

How long have you been shooting?
I got my first camera in 2011 and started my business Z Bella Photography Inc in 2013.

What's your favorite subject matter to shoot?
I would have to say waves at sunrise. Can’t get enough of that first light reflecting on the face of the wave, and the peace that overcomes me at that moment.

Where would be your dream location to take photos?
I have lots, but if I had to pick one to start... Last Thanksgiving I went to Playa del Carmen/Tulum. I would love to spend more time in that part of the world just shooting and improving my Spanish. I have always wanted to live somewhere in that region for a summer.

Who are some photographers that inspire you?
I have always been inspired by Peter Lik and Aaron Chang. And quite honestly I have met some really incredible photographers here in San Diego. Thank you to these friends I shoot with and who inspire me through their own amazing photography: Dana Cano, Jay Manning, Martin Kane, Tyler Jordan, and Aaron Bernal.

What excites you about photography?
I painted most of my life until I started teaching myself photography 10 years ago. It reminds me so much of painting and creating art. It’s challenging yet rewarding to find and freeze beauty that no one else sees or feels. Getting to share those moments is the best part!
