#52weeksofnature Photo Contest Week 19 Winner
The winner of Week 19 of our #52weeksofnature photo contest is Tommy Tatham (@tommytatham). Sometimes the perfect shot takes months of planning and other times your bike breaks down in the desert and it comes right to you. Tommy has won $150 and is getting his winning image printed on a HippyTree t-shirt. Explore the Nature Photography Collective section on our site to view t-shirts of past winners.
Where was the image shot?
Joshua Tree National Park, CA
What camera did you use and what were the settings?
Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
Lens: Canon 16-35mm
Shutter Speed: 1/3200
Was there any special preparation required to capture the photo?
To be fair I took this photo after my motorcycle died in the desert and I was waiting for friends to come and find me. So, I think being prepared for the unexpected is the best practice for anyone.
How long have you been shooting?
I loved taking pictures with disposable cameras when I was a kid so I’d say I started there, but I didn’t start to get serious about shooting until around 2013.
What's your favorite subject matter to shoot?
Mountains and landscapes are my favorite because they can be very dynamic depending on the time of day, quality of light and season. A close second would be my friends because who doesn’t want to look back on good times?
Where would be your dream location to take photos?
I’d have to go with the South Island of New Zealand or Patagonia. They both have mountains and water which are two of my favorite things to look at.
Who are some photographers that inspire you?
Scott Toepfer, Michael Melford, Nick Carver, Jimmy Chin, Goh Iromoto, & Artie Morris to name a few.
What excites you about photography?
Being out in nature and trying your best to capture what moves you. It can be challenging and relaxing at the same time. I also like that it makes me slow down and survey a place or moment and commit the whole experience to memory.
